Program overview
The Electrical Engineering Technology (Power & Controls) Co-op program provides comprehensive training across the electrical power discipline, with a focus on power systems, automated control systems, and industrial electrical design:
-
Common Engineering First Year: Features a common initial year where students complete their first two semesters before transferring (from Gander campus to Ridge Road campus) for upper-year coursework and intersession training.
-
Power & Distribution Design: Evaluates, designs, and specifies facility electrical systems (power, lighting, heating, protection) alongside electrical generation, transmission, and utility distribution networks.
-
Automation & Industrial Controls: Configures, analyzes, and tests industrial control systems using Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs), power electronics, and protection/control devices for commercial and industrial plants.
-
Maintenance & Diagnostics: Maintains and troubleshoots heavy electrical equipment, including motors, generators, power electronic circuits, and transformers in accordance with safety standards and electrical codes.
-
Co-op Work Terms: Integrates real-world industry experience through two co-op work placements, enabling students to collaborate with technical support teams and industry professionals.
-
Special Consideration: May not be suitable for applicants lacking normal color perception due to reliance on color-coded wiring and technical instrumentation.
