Program overview

The Bachelor of Arts in History program teaches students to collect, interpret, and critically evaluate historical materials—including documents, testimonies, and artifacts—to understand how moments of the past shape the present and future.

The program offers two interrelated primary streams alongside diverse thematic coursework:

  • Primary Streams: North American History (including Canadian history) and European History.

  • Core Topics & Themes: Women’s history, Indigenous history, environmental history, military history, medieval history, social movements, intellectual history, and the history of Northern Ontario.

In their fourth year, students can complete an independent major research project (HIST 4055) under personal faculty supervision, which may involve travel to archives in other cities to consult primary sources. The department also houses a Research Chair in the History of French Ontario.
